One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, More

Tequila DrinksTequila is a drink with a very rich history that can be traced as back as 2,000 years ago. This particular Tequila beverage is named after Tequila town in Mexico whereby this particular Tequila liquor was originally being used in rituals. Its production began in 1956 and the product was first commercialized by Jose Cuervo. Tequila was imported to the US in the late 1800 and with the up-spring of global events such as world wars and Mexican revolution the product’s international popularity surged.

Where is Tequila Derived?
This particular liquor is manufactured by distilling fermented juices of the blue agave plant. Under normal conditions, this particular plant normally takes ten years to be fully grown to be used for producing Tequila. The plant is usually slow baked in steam ovens until all starches are completely converted into sugar. The by product will then be crushed so that juice can be extracted before being fermented.

Tequila Agave or Tequila Mixto
Mexican laws require that all Tequilas produced in their country should contain 100% agave. The law also requires that all Tequila liquor should be bottled before being inspected. Due to these stringent requirements, very few Tequila distillers can manage to produce the Tequila drink with the required standards and when produced Tequila bottle is usually very expensive. On the other hand Tequila liquor that is not 100% is referred to as Mixto because it is distilled using sugar and water. Mixto can also be produced outside Mexico.

Distillation Procedures
Tequila drink is usually distilled inside some huge pot until it produces very clear spirits. It is also possible to produce darker variants of Tequila liquor and this can be achieved by adding caramel or through barrel aging process. Tequila can also be flavored using coconut, prune concentrate, or sherry.

Types of Tequilas Existing in the Market
Silver or Blanco Tequila
This is a clear spirit that is either 100% agave or Mixto. It is primarily used for mixing fruit based drinks, and when Silver Tequila is aged, it rarely goes beyond sixty days inside stainless steel tanks.

Gold or Joven Tequila
This is basically unaged silver Tequila which is flavoured with caramel and at the same time comes with some colouring. This type of Tequila is usually very sweet and perfect for shots.

Reposado Tequila
It is also referred to as rested and it is usually aged in casks or wooden tanks and aged for approximately eight weeks.  In order to obtain a more classic tequila quality this very Tequila drink can be aged from 3-9 months. It can also be 100% agave or Mixto variant.

Anejo Tequila
It is aged for a minimum of one year inside white or French oak barrels. Quality Anejo Tequila are aged for between 18-36 months. This very Tequila product is best enjoyed using a sniffer in order to appreciate its rich aroma.

It is also important to take note that if Tequila liquor is aged beyond 3 years then it falls into a special fifth category known as the Extra Anejo Tequila.

This is also a form of alcoholic drink that comes from Maguey which is basically some kind of agave. In order to bolster its perceived safety levels, a worm is usually placed inside any of the bottles containing Mezcal to prove that the alcohol content is high enough to preserve the life of a worm. This particular worm is the same larva between 1-2 months that normally lives in Agave plants. However, Top quality Mezcal does not have any worm inside them.

Selecting a Tequila drink
There are various tequila brands and selecting the most appropriate Tequila product is a difficult task. Due to this there are various factors that have to be taken into consideration including;

Type: Anejo, Reposado, Gold, or Blanco Tequila
Purity: Is it 100% Agave or a Mixto
Distiller registration number
CRT: Certification from Tequila Regulation Council
DOT: Origin number that indicates compliance with Mexican regulations
Tequila Alcoholic content
