How Many Calories In Whiskey, Bourbon, Rum, Tequila And BrandyAlthough some of those alcohol bottles can be really beautiful, watch out, because calories in whiskey can really add up! The variety of colors alone can help decorate a bar in the home, not to mention their craftsmanship. Pick one of those bottles up for an inspection, however, and there is something that you won’t find. Something that is on almost every consumable product in the United States. Something that is stated clearly, by law, on all non-alcoholic beverages sold in supermarkets. That something is calorie counts and ingredients. Somehow, the alcohol companies have dodged this requirement and it is good for them – the calorie counts can be shocking.

Before the calories in whiskey and other liquors and spirits are revealed, here are some common measurements:

The federal legal standard for one drink of spirits is 1.5 ounces. That is not a whole lot. It is what fits inside a jigger; that shot glass looking thing that bartenders use to measure drinks at a bar. The alcohol content is much higher in spirits than in beer and wine, so the measurement for one standard drink is much lower. Five ounces of wine and 12 ounces of beer make one standard drink respectively.

Calories in Bourbon, Rum, & Whiskey

Rum and whiskey generally have the same amount of calories. Each of the spirits is usually flavored or spiced. Bourbon is a form of whiskey, so these three alcohols all contain roughly the same amount of calories per standard drink. There are approximately 97 calories per standard drink of rum, whiskey and bourbon.

Calories in Tequila

Tequila has just a tad less calories than its counterparts. A shot of tequila, minus the lime, will supply roughly 96 calories. Tequila is another flavored spirit.

Calories in Brandy

Brandy is a funny liquor when it comes to calories. This spirit is lost somewhere in between a standard spirit drink and wine. Brandy contains a shade above 70 calories per standard shot, or 1.5 ounces of liquid, but brandy is often drank in much higher quantities like wine. Five ounces of brandy comes out to be a little over 230 calories.

Calories in Beer

Beer usually contains 150 calories per standard drink, which is 12 ounces of liquid. Sugary liqueurs can have upward of 200 calories per standard drink, which is only an ounce and a half. So, distilled spirits are a good option for the drinker who would like to cut calories in whiskey, especially for those liquors that don’t require mixers. A fine whiskey, bourbon, or sipping rum is where you will find the least amount of calories in whiskey.
