Big Ginger And Skinny Ginger – 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey

2 Gingers WhiskeyOkay as most of my readers know I am quite partial to the Irish Whiskey family.  I usually have a bottle of Jameson in the cabinet. Maybe it’s the Irish heritage of me and my wife or it could just be our red hair. Hence- Red Head Oak Barrel.

Minnesota residents like their whiskey and although 2 Gingers whiskey is distilled in Ireland at the Kilbeggan distillery, its roots are definitely in the Midwest state. The Big Ginger whiskey is named for the mother of creator Kieran Follard, rather than the strong flavored herb. Although 2 Gingers whiskey was at first marketed and sold only in Minnesota, the whiskey is now being expanded into other states, including Illinois, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2 Gingers is smooth and very easy to sip, just as you would expect from an Irish whiskey. This Big Ginger whiskey also appeals to a wider audience because of its definitive and noticeable sweet taste and mild flavor. It also has hints of caramel, vanilla, citrus and honey and sweet notes due to its aging in sherry barrels for 4 years. The whiskey has a light and rather attractive gold amber color and taste tests found that it goes down smoothly either in a cocktail, or when served straight.

If you are an experienced whisky drinker or connoisseur, you may feel that 2 Gingers is too mild to really challenge the palate, although its mild and sweet flavor will probably appeal to the beginner whiskey drinker.

Many whiskey drinkers have added it to their list of drinkable whiskies, although it may not take the place of other established favorites, such as Jameson.

We were recently contacted by 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey PR team and asked us to try their signature drinks. The Big Ginger and the Skinny Ginger.

BIG GINGER®

  • 2 parts 2 GINGERS® Whiskey
  • Ginger Ale
  • Lemon Wedge
  • Lime Wedge

Pour the 2 GINGERS® Whiskey into a pint glass with ice. Top with ginger ale, followed by a wedge of a lemon and lime.

SKINNY GINGER®

  • 2 parts 2 GINGERS® Whiskey
  • Diet Ginger Ale
  • Lemon Wedge
  • Lime Wedge

Pour the 2 GINGERS® Whiskey into a pint glass with ice. Top with diet ginger ale, followed by a wedge of a lemon and lime.

Although I was short a lemon and lime wedge I did try both the Big Ginger and the Skinny Ginger. I feel that the drink is simply average, rather than poor or great. 2 Gingers is the obvious choice to use in a Big Ginger. However, many whisky experts consider that a good Irish whiskey does not belong in a cocktail such as big ginger and for that reason, their $20 is better spent on a bottle of Jameson or something similar. 2 Gingers just isn’t there yet despite the fact that it is good in a Big Ginger.
